How to Vote

Everything you need to know about voting in California for the June 2, 2026 Primary Election.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Be a US citizen
  • Be a California resident
  • Be at least 18 years old by election day
  • Not currently in state or federal prison for a felony conviction
  • Not currently found mentally incompetent by a court

Update Your Registration

You need to register or update your registration if you:

  • Move to a new address
  • Change your name
  • Want to change your political party affiliation

Important Registration Deadline

Register at least 15 days before the election to receive your ballot in the mail. Same-day registration is also available at your county election office or any polling location.

Visit your county elections office for help registering or with any questions about voting.

What You Will Need

Required items to register:

  • • Your California Driver's License or California ID number, or
  • • The last 4 digits of your social security number, or
  • • Your date of birth
If you don't have these, you can still register by submitting a paper voter registration form. The county will assign a unique identification number to your registration.

Safe at Home Participants

Survivors of domestic violence, stalking, and human trafficking participating in the Safe at Home confidential address program may select Vote-by-Mail or visit any polling place. To learn more, contact the Safe at Home program at (877) 322-5227 or safeathome@sos.ca.gov.

Future Voters: Pre-Register Now

If you are 16 or 17 years old, you can pre-register to vote so that you'll be automatically registered when you turn 18.
